Pretoria – The Department of Justice and Constitutional Development has warned against calls to make public the national register for sex offenders.
It is believed that making the register public would curb sexual offences against children, but according to the department, this would fuel mob justice against perpetrators.
…
Department spokesperson Steve Mahlangu said publicising the register could not be done without violating the right to privacy of an individual, as enshrined in the Bill of Rights.
“There are also dangers of the register being used unjustifiably to fuel acts of mob justice against perpetrators. This is among a number of issues that make publicising the register a contentious and complicated discussion,” Mahlangu said. He said the purpose of the register was to prevent recidivism by convicted sex offenders
O.M.G.! An actual common sense rebuttal to the public registry. Off to S. Africa I am! Who would have ever thought that the land of Apartheid would be more humanitarian and recognize individual rights than the “Land of the Free”.
Huh…who would’ve thought that common sense would prevail in the former land of apartheid? America it’s time to step up your politics!
Since the passing of Mandela, many parts of SA have deteriorated into a tribal state. The mobs and armed gangs are free roaming in many areas and there is tremendous racial strife. They have mobs that wouldn’t hesitate to do home invasions and kill someone on the registry, especially if they were of a certain race.Their situation is very different than the US. But the way things are going we will be there in about ten years. People with money have to hire their own private security becasue the police force has deteriorated and is full of corruption. People are on their own in many parts. Don’t think this is a rational concern for the registrants, this is just to try and prevent wanton violence. It is already out of control in SA and is actually encouraged by Malena the head of the EFF which is a representative body of SA.
